HEIC Files Explained: What They Are and How to Open Them
What Is HEIC?
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is the default photo format on Apple devices running iOS 11 and later. When you take a photo on an iPhone or iPad, it is saved as a HEIC file rather than the traditional JPG.
HEIC is based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard, which uses advanced compression technology derived from the HEVC video codec. The result is photos that are roughly half the size of equivalent JPGs while maintaining the same or better visual quality.
Why Apple Uses HEIC
Apple adopted HEIC for several compelling reasons:
- Storage savings: Photos take up roughly 50 percent less space, which is significant on devices with fixed storage
- Better quality: At the same file size, HEIC preserves more detail than JPG
- Advanced features: HEIC supports transparency, image sequences, depth maps, and 16-bit color
- Live Photos: HEIC can store both the still image and the short video clip in a single file
For iPhone users, HEIC is largely invisible — photos look and behave the same as they always have. The problems start when you try to use these files outside the Apple ecosystem.
The Compatibility Problem
Despite its technical advantages, HEIC is not universally supported. You may encounter issues when:
- Uploading to websites: Many web forms and content management systems only accept JPG or PNG
- Sharing with non-Apple users: Windows and Android devices may not open HEIC files natively
- Using older software: Photo editing programs released before 2018 typically cannot read HEIC
- Printing services: Online print shops usually require JPG files
Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC files after installing the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, but this is an extra step that many users do not know about.
How to Open HEIC Files
On Mac
macOS supports HEIC natively. Double-click the file to open it in Preview, or use any recent version of Photos, Pixelmator, or other Mac image editors.
On Windows
Install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. After installation, HEIC files will open in the Photos app and File Explorer will show thumbnails.
On the Web
The simplest cross-platform solution is to convert HEIC to JPG online. This works on any device with a web browser and produces universally compatible JPG files.
How to Convert HEIC to JPG
Converting HEIC files to JPG is straightforward with several approaches:
- Online converter: Use our HEIC to JPG converter for instant, browser-based conversion with no file uploads to external servers
- iPhone settings: Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select "Most Compatible" to shoot in JPG going forward
- Mac Preview: Open the HEIC file, then use File → Export and select JPEG
- AirDrop/Share: When sharing via AirDrop or email, iOS automatically converts HEIC to JPG for non-Apple recipients
Should You Switch Your iPhone to JPG?
Switching your iPhone to shoot in JPG (Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible) eliminates compatibility issues but doubles your storage usage. A better approach for most people is to keep shooting in HEIC and convert files only when needed.
If you frequently share photos with non-Apple users or upload to websites that do not accept HEIC, keeping our HEIC to JPG converter bookmarked provides a quick solution without sacrificing the storage benefits of HEIC on your device.
The Future of HEIC
Support for HEIC continues to grow. Android 10 and later includes partial HEIF support, and more web browsers are adding native decoding capabilities. However, JPG will remain the universal standard for years to come, making conversion tools essential for anyone working across platforms.
